North Florida Nurse Arrested for Neglecting Elderly Patient

An investigation led by the Attorney General’s Medicaid Fraud Control Unit (MFCU) ended with an arrest of a north Florida registered nurse (RN), in Suwannee County. The arrest was based on allegations of failing to assess and monitor a 94-year-old patient’s condition. The patient fell and broke her hip and shoulder, and later died.

According to the investigation, the RN allegedly failed to care for and monitor the condition of a 94-year-old woman. The RN is accused of falsifying hospital medical records to conceal her failure to provide proper nursing care to the victim.

Generic Drug Maker Ranbaxy Pleaded Guilty to Claims of Adulterated Drugs-Must Pay $500 Million Fine

Generic drug maker Ranbaxy USA Inc., pleaded guilty to drug safety violations and will be responsible for paying $500 million in criminal and civil fines, according to the Department of Justice (DOJ). The fines will resolve claims that the manufacturer sold inferior drugs and made false statements to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) about manufacturing practices at two factories in India. This announcement was made by the DOJ on May 13, 2013. This settlement is the largest drug settlement to date involving a generic drug manufacturer and drug safety.

Purpose of Florida E-FORCSE Prescription Database Not for Disciplinary or Criminal Prosecution Purposes Against Physicians, Pharmacists or Other Health Professionals

As you are no doubt aware now, Florida has an active prescription drug monitoring program (PDMP). It is called the “Electronic-Florida Online Reporting of Controlled Substances Evaluation” or “E-FORCSE.” More often it is referred to simply as the “prescription drug database” by Florida physicians.

The Florida Legislature adopted the E-FORCSE system in Florida by Section 893.055, Florida Statutes.

Section 893.055(7)(b), Florida Statutes, States Access to Program’s Database is Limited to Program Manager.

A pharmacy, prescriber, or dispenser shall have access to information in the prescription drug monitoring program’s database which relates to a patient of that pharmacy, prescriber, or dispenser in a manner established by the department as needed for the purpose of reviewing the patient’s controlled substance prescription history.
